WRPCO Says Enjoy the Holiday, But Safety Near Its Dams Is Important All Year Long
Necedah, WI - Wisconsin River Power Company (WRPCO) urges recreational and fishing
enthusiasts to practice year-round safety near dams and hydroelectric facilities. The company
endorses Dam Safety Awareness Week in April, but as outdoor enthusiasts take to the water over the
Memorial Day period, a safety reminder is warranted.
Every year there are incidents around dams that injure or kill people just out to have some fun. Using
common sense would prevent most of the accidents around dams. Here are some pointers:
- Don't try to get too close! Warning signs and buoys are there for a reason. Recent heavy rains or
the arrival of a sudden storm can make the areas immediately above and bellows dams even more
dangerous. Keep your distance.
- Sirens and flashing lights mean imminent danger.
WRPCO operates the Petenwell and Castle Rock dams on the Wisconsin River between Nekoosa, WI
and Wisconsin Dells.
