WRPCO Media Advisory - Outdoor opening: Spots remain available for Deer Hunt for Disabled Hunters
Application deadline less than two weeks away
Necedah — Individuals with disabilities still have the chance to experience a Wisconsin tradition in a unique environment Oct. 11-13 during Wisconsin River Power Company's (WRPCO) 11th annual Deer Hunt for Disabled Hunters. Interested hunters can submit an application on the WRPCO website through June 1.
Each year, the Deer Hunt for Disabled Hunters is the only time members of the public can access or hunt inside the 750-acre Petenwell Wildlife Area, located between the WRPCO Petenwell and Castle Rock hydroelectric dams. Space is limited to 10 participants, and a state-issued hunting permit for persons with disabilities is required to take part in the hunt.
Hunters and companions selected for the hunt are responsible for:
- Some meals, including dinner on Saturday, Oct. 12
- Hunting equipment, license and deer processing
- Transportation to and from the Petenwell Sevice Center
WRPCO will provide participants dinner on Friday, Oct. 11, as well breakfast Oct. 12 and 13. An orientation and gun safety presentation will be given to all participants before the start of the event.
Volunteer assistance available
Volunteers from WRPCO will be available to serve as companions and to assist hunters throughout the weekend with tasks such as deer tracking, dragging, field dressing and temporary storage. WRPCO representatives also will transport hunters to and from deer stands that are functional for all participants.
Residents who are selected to take part in this year's Deer Hunt for Disabled Hunters will be notified by June 30.
