Start summer safely by following precautions near hydroelectric dams

As residents and outdoor enthusiasts head out to enjoy the holiday weekend, Wisconsin Public Service (WPS), We Energies and Wisconsin River Power Co. (WRPCO) remind them to take safety precautions if they plan to be near a hydroelectric dam.

In recognition of these important safety precautions, Governor Tony Evers has proclaimed May 31 as National Dam Safety Awareness Day in Wisconsin. WPS, We Energies and WRPCO urge residents and members of the public to be aware of the safety steps they need to take when boating, fishing, swimming or kayaking near hydroelectric dams.

Staying safe near hydroelectric dams

Prevent accidents at dams by following these safety tips:

  • Obey all warning signs.
  • Heed flashing lights, horns and sirens.
  • Stay outside of buoy lines.
  • Be aware of rapidly changing water conditions.
  • Bring a cellphone and contact 911 in an emergency.
  • Plan a safe escape route to evacuate at the first sign of danger.
